Note that although the year codes start with A, that by itself is not evidence that these codes were actually in use by Actual observed marks on actual observed guns suggests that the year code system was not in universal use that early. So, just when did the Eibar proof house switch from the older stamps to the newer ones? It looks like the big year was Guns proofed in might have either the older or newer stamps.

Of course dating the older stamps can be an exercise, as they don’t have a date code. Other information such as the serial number of the gun must be used to estimate the manufacture date, which puts limits on the proofing date. Obviously, errors are possible. But so far, is my best guess for the transition date. Everything above is general for Spanish handguns, and applies to Beistegui Hermanos guns as well as Unceta. Now for photos of actual specimens.

I have blown up most of the photos so that they’re of uniform scale.

Here are two pics. I can provide more pics and answer any questions regarding identifying markings, etc. I took it in trade for some work I did for a gun shop. The shop had several rifles I liked, but this one hit me in a certain way.

It’s very “substantial” feeling. The bolt feels like heavy machinery. It’s “smooth” in the same way a well-built and tuned manual transmission in a massive V8 is. When the bolt closes you sense you really “locked” something.

There are a number of methods by which a rifle can be dated, or at least bracketed between certain years of manufacture. For the latter, dates of introduction of military arms can be located within the Government “List of Changes” LoCs as can dates of obsolescence and of modification or upgrade to later marks. You may not necessarily find specific date information within the text of particular pages, but often the images of advertisements or catalogue entries contain some dating ‘give-away’, such as the year in which a particular rifle achieved a notable competition score by someone, but which data is in graphic format and therefore not “searchable” by a text search engine.

Do not briefly glance over a page and assume that the information you require is not there. It may not be immediately obvious, but careful observation may provide you with the information for which you are looking. Such research is a major part of the joy of owning, collecting and shooting classic or historic rifles. Anschutz target rifles fall into this category, and their system is given on the page for these rifles.

The bayonet was patterned after the British bayonet and to make it stand out from the similar British Lithgow bayonet , 2 vertical notches were added to the handle. This makes it extremely easy to spot in a lineup of bayonets and probably also served as a way to easily recognize which bayonet went to which type of gun should there be a mix of weapons. Consequently I have a strong affection for plain-vanilla, work-a-day guns. I don’t know what the word is “honest” I guess. Guns are certainly female, when you consider them in abstract terms, sharing numerous attributes with women. Both guns and women are expensive to acquire and maintain; both are a lot of fun to fool around with; both use powder; some are more interesting than others, but none are wholly uninteresting; you can never have too many of either; and both will kill you if you handle them incorrectly.

While I admire beautiful women in a perfectly respectful and detached sense of course even if I weren’t married I’d not make any effort to acquire one or more for myself.

Page under construction – largely images only. This isn’t one of the semi-autos, but it explains where that semi-auto rework just above comes from.

And here are some early guns which I don’t examine, as they fall outside the Stable Production Period. If the gun has that strange hammer over there by the “1”, it’s nowadays called a cone hammer. The factory never called it anything special; it was always the Military Pistol no matter what hammer it was wearing.
